Yesterday I am reading through some of the headlines at my favorite progressive news site Buzzflash.com and I come upon this news story. I have always felt the importance of separation of church and state and probably now more then ever. As I read this article, from yesterday’s Chicago Tribune, I thought this has nothing to do with religion or saving your soul. This is about power and control. What do you think?
Proclaiming a sense of new energy and empowerment, the nation's Roman Catholic bishops on Wednesday issued instructions to Catholic voters that their eternal salvation could be at stake when they cast ballots.
Bishops emphasized that voters must consider the church's teachings on abortion and other moral issues when they select a candidate for the White House or any other office. If they don't, bishops said, it's not clergy who will judge them but God.
Isn’t that absurd? I have been writing this novel called The God Blog: God Comes to Set The Record Straight (this if for National Novel Writing Month in November) about God shows up on Earth to write on a blog to tell all his people that those who say they speak for Him, do not. “All that has been said in my name is just humans with their agendas trying to have power over others.” This section from the Tribune above is a great example for men trying to control their people. What kind of God would sit there and watch how you voted and then condemn you for eternity for choosing wrongly? That too me is nothing about your soul, that is about wanting you to do as you are told. You are to vote as a group of old men want you to vote. Otherwise they believe they have God on their side and he will enforce their wishes.
Maybe it’s my age, my concern for how much we need to take back the power from all these crazy men (only a few women ever act this crazy), or maybe I am just trying to provoke questions inside you. As you know I am big on questioning what is going on. I will avoid a political rant here even though there is always new stuff to put up into the light of the bright questioning mind.
Please let me know if you think my assessment of the Bishops is off base or if you think they are right and I will probably be on the express train to hell. Either way, I am not worried because there is no hell unless you create one here for yourself in this lifetime. Creating a heaven on earth would be a better goal.
Have a heavenly good day and weekend.
