The Shifting Sands Of A Personal Path

Over the last 30 years I have explored many paths as I have gone in search of ways to open my heart and expand my consciousness.  I have done yoga and tai chi as physical practice and walked many miles in meditation.  I have sat quietly, chanted, had teachers and lived in a spiritual community.  I have studied the ideas of Buddhism, Hinduism, Sufism, the Tao, Shamanism, and more.  I have spent time with teachers/holy people like Ram Dass, Mother Meera, Thich Nhat Hahn and others and been blessed by who they are and the light they spread.

Now it seems my path can only be through me.  I don’t know if there is a God and who is there is I can seek help from but inside I know there are clear callings, guidance made available, and a heart that knows when I am on track or off.  So it is that today I choose to drop all old beliefs about what is good or bad, right or wrong and totally give myself over to the truth of the moment.

This decision to leave the old bricks of a belief system behind is not done easily for someone like me because I have a part of me that wants to learn from those that know so I can know.  I seek to have enough knowing so I can feel like I am enough.  That is part of the past brick structure that I willingly let go of because it has held me back.

The seeker part of me is excited about deepening my own path which I have until now constructed more in reaction to the information I got while exploring the truths of others.   Now I understand that the wisdom of others is not to be acquired but be used to expand what is possible in my own seeking of truth.  Therefore my path is now my own unique way and if by chance it can inform or enhance the way of others I will share what I learn as others have shared what they have learned.

Today as I was walking on the beach I sense that I was trying to apply techniques I had gained along the way and feeling frustrated that they were not working.  How can they work if they are someone else’s techniques?  This gets me excited because now I get to create my own techniques and since I love being creative this is even more energizing.

The following are some ways I know intuitively will work for me because I have already explored and used them.  I am not claiming they are unique to me and these ways may seem similar to other people’s paths but each will have my own spin informed by my heart and my higher self.

Walking in nature being present to the walk with the mind, eyes, and senses taking in all that surrounds me, thinking, feeling, and sensing what is

Sitting or lying quietly and letting my inner guidance, images, and energies show me where to be in the now

Doing different forms of creativity including singing/sound making, movement, writing, collages, drawing and painting and other ways the creative juices might flow

Taking in new ideas to bounce off of so that my understanding can be enriched by the understandings of others

Removing old structures as I get a glimpse of them throughout my daily living and instead creating more freedom to be present and alive to what is

Be as fully present as possible in whatever I am doing

If you have methods that are unique to you and you want to share them please feel free to share them here at the Explore Life Journal.

Read This To Expand Your Light

My wife sent me this most wonderful article that is full of clarity and insight about our thoughts.  Please take the time to read this whole post.  I promise you will feel more expanded for doing so.  You can find our more about this author at this site.

SURRENDER THAT THOUGHT

by Elias Amidon

What is it that makes us feel uneasy, worried, anxious, angry, defensive, jealous, or judgmental? Is it because conditions in the world around us, and the actions of people we encounter, make us feel these feelings? Or is there something else at work?

When we look into the nature of “afflictive emotions” like these, the first thing we notice is that they are always accompanied by thoughts. The second thing we notice is that these thoughts are slippery things, often hard to identify even when exposed to careful introspection and inquiry. The third thing we notice is that we believe in these thoughts. We simply assume that they are the “good reasons” for why we feel uneasy, worried, anxious, etc. But this masks what is really going on: it is not the thoughts themselves, but our belief in them, that creates afflictive emotions. If we don’t believe in our thoughts, they lose their charge; they no longer have the power to stir up emotional and psychological suffering.

You can check this out for yourself by recalling a time a few years ago when you felt anxious or jealous or angry about something. Notice that now you don’t feel those feelings. Why? Because you no longer believe the thoughts that accompanied them; they simply don’t matter to you anymore. Over time, they have lost their charge.

This simple dynamic—that believing our thoughts leads to emotional and psychological suffering—might give us a clue for how to relieve present suffering. But to do so we need to look a little deeper into the nature of thoughts themselves, and into how it is we believe them.

We humans think a lot (at least we think we think), but do we really know what thinking is? Do we know how we think? Let’s try a little experiment here: think of something, anything, and see if you can find where that thought came from. Did you create it on purpose? How? Why did that particular thought appear and not a different one? Look carefully. See if you can discover the exact place or moment in which you “make” a specific thought.

As I attempt this myself, looking to see how I discover the next words in this sentence, I can’t find how I do it. First the word is not there, and then it is. Sometimes a word comes and it seems okay, but after a few moments I discover it is not exactly right, and I try another word or phrase. The new word or phrase appears just as magically as the first one, out of nowhere!

Here’s another seemingly magical quality of thought: watch the stream of thoughts in your mind and see if you can find where a particular thought goes after it’s finished. What do you find? It vanishes! The little thought leaves no trace, simply dissolving into thin air.

If you’ve stayed with this experiment so far, you might see that your thoughts are less substantial than you assumed. They come out of nowhere and vanish into nowhere.

This insubstantiality of thoughts is easy to see with the random thoughts of our experiment, but it is much more difficult to see with thoughts that matter, thoughts we believe in. When our thoughts tell us we’re not good enough, or that we have to improve ourselves, or that other people are not good enough, or this is to blame, or that is wrong, or something bad might happen, these kinds of thoughts seem to stick to us. This stickiness is our belief in them. We cling to them with our belief, our interest, our sense that they represent the truth.

Huang Po, the 9th Century Zen master, once remarked, “Your sole concern should be, as thought succeeds thought, to avoid clinging to any of them.”

How can we do that? How can we avoid clinging to our thoughts, especially when our well-being seems to be at stake? Here is where it is helpful to practice a little, first with less “important” thoughts, and then with the ones that we firmly believe in.

I call this practice “Surrender That Thought.” It is a deceptively simple practice. You might wish to try it now, after you finish reading the rest of this paragraph. Simply pause for a few moments, resting in your natural, clear state of mind. Wait. At some point you will notice a thought happening. As soon as you notice it, no matter what it is about, surrender your interest in it. I don’t mean that you should try to stop the thought from happening or deny it. Just let go of your interest in it. (If you believe it’s a really important thought and you feel you can’t afford to let go of your interest in it, tell yourself you’ll pick it up again in five minutes.) Surrender that thought. Some students have asked me, “What do I surrender the thought to?" It’s not necessary to think of it that way; there is nothing you need to surrender the thought to. Simply let it go; relinquish your interest in it; abandon your belief—even momentarily—in its veracity, its truth. Now notice carefully what happens.

In the instant of surrendering your interest in the thought, you may notice that a subtle sense of openness occurs. This sense may be quite brief—another thought may quickly take its place, even the thought: “Oh look! A sense of openness!” So venture again into surrendering that thought, and the next, and the next. This need not require effort—the surrendering we’re contemplating here doesn’t take any energy or even intention. Intention, after all, is also a form of thinking. Just drop your interest in the contents of your thought-stream.

It’s an amazing experiment, worth exploring on your own in any situation. You might be concerned that by surrendering your thinking mind like this you would become stupid, or not understand what’s happening, or be unprepared for what is being asked of you. But as you become familiar with this thought-surrendering dynamic you will find that your understanding is more acute, not less. Understanding is instantaneous; it’s not about the conclusion-making of the thought-stream.

As you become fluent with this practice, you may discover that in addition to experiencing a sense of openness, spaciousness and silence, when you release your interest in the thought, you may also experience a kind of relief, even a sense of joy. This joy doesn’t have to do with anything—it has no cause. It is the joy intrinsic to clear, open awareness. “Figuring things out” is left behind. For a moment, or longer, you find yourself in a space of unknowing which is clear, open presence. As the Dalai Lama famously said, “I sit at the table of unknowing and invite you to join me here.

Once you become familiar with surrendering less “important” thoughts, you can explore surrendering ones you have more investment in, that you believe in. For example, say you are at a party and you are participating in a conversation with a group of people. You say something that someone else responds to critically or jokingly. You notice a sinking feeling in your stomach and the stream of thoughts that start proliferating in your mind: I knew that person doesn’t like me; she’s so bitchy; now the others will join in the attack on me; I’m such an idiot, why did I say anything? I hate this party; and so on. As soon as you notice these kinds of thoughts showing up, surrender them. Abandon your interest in them. Nothing else needs to happen. In the openness of unknowing you are completely safe and innocent. You have no need to defend yourself or judge anyone. You are the clear presence that you are. Just that.

Instead of conditioning the next moment with troubled thoughts, you surrender your belief in them; now the next moment is open, untroubled, and free. You have no need to judge the world around you; you allow it to be what it is. If the situation calls for a response from you, fine, you respond, not from defensiveness or judgment, but from the natural ease of your presence. In the quiet mystery of surrendering your thoughts, you have released any fixity of belief or position-taking, and you are welcomed by openness, quiet, and a most subtle joy—a lightness of being. In surrendering something of no real value, you have gained the world.

Maybe All You Need To Do Is Spread Love And Light?

What if your purpose is as simple as opening to love and the light and spreading love and light wherever you go?  That is my focus at this point in my life and I wanted to know if you are interested in joining me?

Here’s the beginning plan that will obviously expand as more love and light informs what you and I are doing.  Each day set the intention to have an open heart and interact with the world from the place of love, compassion and kindness.  If you find yourself not open in the heart take a few minutes to realign with your heart and invite it to reopen.  This will take practice but if you only have 1% improvement each day, in 100 days you will be 100% better at it.

The light part is a little more complicated but well worth the effort.  Let’s equate light with consciousness.  The more conscious you and I are the more light we can spread out into the world.  The way to more consciousness is: to live as fully as possible in the now; to be mindful of your thoughts and feelings; and to be open to insights from within or from the universe.  Each time the light of insight, awareness, inspiration, and intuition goes on inside the wattage of your light increases.  Soon you will be a beacon that shines wherever you go and those around you will get to bask in that light.

All you and I have to do is keep on returning to the heart and make sure it is open and keep moving toward the light.  This is a barriers game where we are removing our own barriers so we can love and let the light in.  Just on the other side of these barriers is infinite and eternal love and light.  See you in the light.

Most Fear Is Just A Thought We Can Change

Yesterday as I climbed on my bike up into the mountains behind where we live I noticed the working of the mind as I wondered what would I do it I encountered a bear.  One thing for sure is I would ride like hell downhill.  The other for sure is that chances of me running into a bear are very slight at most but the mind run by the ego likes to toss in a good dose of fear whenever possible.  Yes the ego is being protective and we need to be aware that fear is not necessary in almost all situations that it comes up.  What would it be like to live without fear dictating the way we were in the world?

Let’s start with the several premises about the role of the mind and fear.  The first is that most thoughts we have are not real and need to be more closely examined.  The second is fear plays a very prominent role in the workings of the ego-mind so when fear comes up it always needs to be questioned.  The third is that from a very simplified perspective we could look at fear as one of the two basic human feelings.  The opposite of fear is love.

The first idea that our thoughts are not real is something to always keep in mind.  Thoughts shape how we feel so they are powerful in how we experience life.  If we are not happy then we need to change our thoughts.  If we are not ok with how our life is going, we need to change our thinking.  Fearful thoughts can be changed so we are not fearful.  So our thoughts are what we make of them.  Why not choose thoughts that nurture and enhance our lives?

The second idea is the ego-mind’s function is to keep us safe and to protect the structure of our personality.  To the ego this seems essential but really most of us are not that much in danger and our personalities are not even who we are.  If we understand that the ego is always on the lookout and trying its best to keep us well defended then we understand why fear is the ego-minds major theme.  Under all the static of this seemingly endless vigil of protection is a much wiser mind.  Mindfulness is about touching into this wiser mind where higher consciousness rules not the fear program of the ego.

The third idea is there are two basic emotions: love and fear.  Love is the expansive and open state and fear is the contracting and closed state.  In each moment, if we can be conscious, we could see that at a deeper level we are choosing to be open or closed.  A way to notice that subtle level of expansion or contraction is to feel the body.  The body will tell us whether we are opening or closing if we pay attention.  This level of attention can be very insightful and informative about our interactions with the world.  Why not be open and expansive in the world.

With the integration of three ideas about the workings of our mind and the role of fear we can bring a higher level of awareness to how we experience life.  A simple practice is to go throughout our day just noticing if we are opening or closing.  Do this noticing without judging and with a spirit of seeking understanding.  As we understand where and why we contract we will put the light of awareness on our fear causing thoughts.  Soon our level of awareness will expand and we will move our lives forward with much less fear.

Let's Try Being In The Moment

In this moment what are you aware of?  Let’s do a tune in and see what mindfulness you and I can bring to our lives in the now.

Where are you? What do you notice about your surroundings?  What do you see if you look up from reading this?  Look around; is there beauty?  What do you need to see with a fresh perspective? The things of life too often go unnoticed yet we placed them there with a purpose in mind.

Are there people or pets around?  Are they wanting to interact or keeping their distance?  Who provides you with support?  Who needs support from you?  Is there love flowing in your environment?  Are there powerful emotions that need to be expressed?  Is it a safe, creative, nurturing environment?

Now let’s go more inwardFirst what is going in your mind with these questions?  Is there openness about exploring the awareness of the moment?  Is the mind noisy or quiet?  Are you aware of the ego’s presence and its agenda?  Are you comfortable with silence?  Is your internal dialogue supportive and encouraging or judging and critical?  Is your mind open or invested in being right and in control?  What beliefs are guiding your life?  Are any of these beliefs limiting you?

How is your body doing?  Are you comfortable in your body?  What do you need to do to feel ok with your body?  Is your posture in alignment?  Where is there tension?  What is your body telling you that it needs?  Are you hungry or tired?  What ways does your body need to move to feel more alive?  What kind of energy do you have?  What shifts do you need to make to be more energized or more peaceful?

What emotions are you aware of?  Which emotions keep on coming up for you because something needs to shift?  Are you often upset, worried or angry?  Is your heart open?  Do you feel love flowing in you and where do you share love in your life?  Are you open to receiving love?  Do you have compassion for yourself and others?  Have you ever taken the time to just watch the energetic flow of emotions in you?  Are you willing to be ok with all your feelings?

Are you in touch with your divine nature, higher self, the spirit within you?  Do you listen to and follow the guidance of your spirit?  Is your intuition active in your life?  How do you make contact with a higher source, higher power, God, Great Spirit and other names of the sacred?  What is the guidance of your soul trying to tell you?  Do you have any inner practices that you use to take you into higher or more expanded states?  Are you willing to explore your inner practices often?

I hope you find these questions helpful, there are many more things you and I can ask and explore within.  The asking and exploring of self is mindfulness for daily living and it will provide you with many insights and awareness that will greatly enrich your life.

Ten Truths Worth Exploring

There seems to be so much uncertainty about life these days that I was thinking what do I trust to be true.  This is what is true for me and I highly encourage you to find what you know to be true for you.  Truth comes from experience, from heart resonance, from spending quiet time, from exploring ideas, and from being open to new insight and awareness.  The exploration of truth is a life long journey that fills you with joy and guides you to the life you want to create.

The following 10 ideas are what I know to be true at this point in my exploration of life:

  1. The power of the mind to imagine, create and realize is unlimited.  Get clear what you want to make happen and do it
  2. In the quiet of your inner wisdom and intuition is all the knowing and consciousness of humanity
  3. All emotions are ok and if allowed to flow through your body will help keep you healthy
  4. The key to creating what you want in life is to raise your vibration.  Positive energy creates positive results
  5. If you choose to be happy each day, you will be
  6. Your spiritual nature is limitless and eternal and waiting to guide you
  7. Freedom, purpose and inner peace can be yours if you open fully to who you are
  8. Health comes from expanding your mind, feeling your feelings, caring for your body, and expressing your spirit
  9. If you learn to live in the now and be fully present to life you will experience true joy and peace
  10. Love is the most powerful force on the planet and you have an endless supply of love inside

What truths have you discovered?

We Can Rise Above The Challenges Of Our Life

Yesterday I ran and my wife walked in the bright sun on a windy day and then went to the most amazing place.  Cape Perpetua is a state park along the Oregon coast not far from where we live.  We went up 800 feet up into the park to where is overlooks the ocean.  The view was so amazing I am still buzzing from the excitement of being there.  On a clear day the sign says you can see 35 miles out into the ocean and 70 miles of the coast.  It was one of those clear days.  Everyone who comes to visit will get a chance to check this view out.  It is one visitors will not forget.

The advantage of looking down from high above is that everything seems smaller and less significant.  Wouldn’t it be nice if we could do the same thing with our life?  If we could look down at the stuff and dramas from far above we would be so much less caught up in things and we could relax more.

The good news is we can rise above our lives and look down at it from a more detached perspective.  Mindfulness gives us that ability in a more metaphoric way.  “Out-of-body experiences” and forms of “stepping back” allow us to ascend above the stuff and noise.  When we are able to look down over the circumstances of what seemed so important down there on the ground, we are more able to consciously assess the situations we find ourselves in.  This above perspective allows us to watch with little or no attachment to results.   This non-attachment to results is a very freeing experience.  Imagine a life where we lived as fully as we could without worry or fear about what others may think or if we are doing things right.

Speaking of rising about the stuff of life, how about this idea: “Beliefs are simply thoughts we are unwilling to let go of.” When I read this I thought YES that is so right and my hope is that everyone who reads this will deeply consider the truth of this statement.  Most of us live our whole lives based on beliefs that are false, limiting or in need of a closer examination.  If we want to be free we need to place everything under the light of higher consciousness and true compassion to know what the truth is for our lives.

Mindfully Be Open

It’s early and I can still feel the warmth of my sleep as I sit here writing this morning.  My dreams seem so vivid and busy lately.  In my dreams I am laboring away at some task that doesn’t matter.  Sound like what it felt like in my last job when I wasn’t doing therapy or talking with the wonderful staff. The other mind of the dream state is full of interesting information about who we are and what we are working on.  These dreams feel like stuff I am trying to move beyond.  Maybe it is time to go exploring the dreamscape and see what insights await.  Some would argue that the dream state is more a slice of reality then what we imagine our life to be in our waking state.

However, there seems to be more than enough insights available from practicing mindfulness in the day-to-day dramas of life.  This morning I woke with mindfulness on the mind.  I thought one way I will be out in the world is through teaching mindfulness, which is wonderful practice for quieting the mind and for opening the heart.   Mindfulness brings inward shifts at many levels.

The mind innately begins to quiet down when we take time to watch what is going on inside.  This watchfulness simply notes, free of the burden of needing to judge, what thoughts are passing through.  In watching the speed of the word stream of thoughts slows down because the intention of watching brings the attention of the mind into focus.

The heart and our emotional state are affected by mindfulness also.  When we enter the impartial mode of observing our inner processes, we allow whatever is going on at a feeling level to surface so that we might become aware of it.  If we can simply view and be ok with what we are feeling that opens the heart.  All emotions are ok but sometimes we have learned to be judgmental about certain feelings.  Anger is a great example because many of us were taught that anger is an emotion we shouldn’t feel and express.  Anger is a natural emotion and to judge it as bad is simply not true.  Yes the expression of anger can be destructive but that is more from stuffing it until the person blows.  If anger was noticed and acknowledged as it came up the sometimes negative charge around it would easily dissipate and more awareness about self would come about.

The heart often contains the pain of feelings we have tried to avoid or suppress.  This avoiding or trying to push down feelings never works and makes us guarded in the heart and closes us to the flow of love, compassion and kindness which is our natural state.  We all have felt when our heart closes down and intuitively we know are hearts need to be open or we become less of what is possible in us.

With an open heart and a quiet mind we can be anything we want to be.  The quiet mind is most often an open mind.  When we are open the world awaits with positive anticipation our expression.

Why Are Open Minds And Hearts Important?

Having an open mind and heart seems like the way to be in the world.  How come people choose to close down their minds?  How come people close their hearts?  Yes I am sure some people could give pretty rational reasons why they have closed their hearts.  Yes, we all have been hurt by others, but does it make sense to close down to avoid hurt in the future?  Is a closed heart really a safe heart?  Isn’t a closed heart a lonely one?

What would be a good rational reason for closing our mind: to keep from letting other ideas in; to hold firmly to our judgment of others; to refuse to give up a belief not matter what; or to insist we are right?   What are the benefits of a closed mind?

These questions seem important because the tendency to close our hearts and minds need to be examined.  Is it possible to realize our potential, to express our uniqueness, to truly be happy if we are closed in our minds and/or hearts?  The answer seems obvious, which is that to fully express who we are, we need to remain open to all the possibilities within us.  Closed down in any way equals closed down to what is possible.

Driving forces to close down include fear of the unknown, fear of the future, hurt from the past, self-doubt, a need for control, distrust of self and others, suffering from poor circumstances, old beliefs that limit us, and other factors.  Many of these conditions begin in the ego-mind guided by fear and are focused on the past or the future.  This obsession about “what was” or “what will be” is the workings of a mind that does not feel comfortable in the present.

The antidote for the fearful agenda of the mind is to focus on the now.  In this moment there are endless possibilities that can move your life toward love, peace, freedom and happiness.  The choice is to focus on the now, to choose happiness as the way you want to be in the world, and to be aware if you are open or closed in your thinking and in your heart.

Here are five ways to help move towards openness:

  1. Be fully present in your life and spend as little time as possible on worries about the future or regrets from the past.
  2. Make it a daily practice to be aware of what is going on in your mind, no judging allowed but redirection and quiet times are encouraged.
  3. Tune in throughout your day to notice the flow of the heart.  Focus on keeping the heart open and flowing with compassion.
  4. Each day practice being kind to self and others, this may include reaching out to those who need support or taking time for yourself.
  5. Another regular practice is to take the time to explore all your beliefs, many are false and limiting and need to be revised or updated.

The morning mist on a walk at low tide,

Have a good week.

Guided By The Light

The morning air is damp with sea air and blue fights to take over the morning’s clouds and another day begins here at our quiet little retreat on the Oregon Coast.  I was thinking about how important guidance is because we could all use some inspiration and direction at times.  Reading has always been a great source of guidance for me; so to has my intuition.  The guidance of others is also valuable and that is why people are drawn to inspirational teachers, mentors and gurus.

It is the intention of this blog and of the work I do with others to provide guidance not from a know-it-all point of view but more as a fellow traveler who has explored and experimented with lots of ideas, methods and directions.  Over the next few weeks or so I am going to provide more focused guidance drawing from new inspiration and past ideas that seem true today.  I have five areas I want to initially offer guidance on and there may be more to come.

The following are five areas of life that we would all benefit from helpful advise on:

Expanding your mind and heart

Living with purpose

Finding peace and happiness

Caring for your well-being

Aligning with your spiritual force

These five directions for guidance will share some common themes but each takes a specific focus so that we might fully realize their potential is us.

Yesterday we visited a beautiful lighthouse and I thought this is such a great metaphor.  The beacon of light from the lighthouse is what we all need when we are in the choppy ocean of life.  In my own humble way I want to be that lighthouse for those of you interested in a source of light for your guidance.

Here is a picture of the Heceta Lighthouse and a view from the light keeper’s perspective.

Here is an inspirational video called the Wayseer’s Manifesto if you feel you are different then most people

Stay tuned and I will share more soon.

A Question Of Faith

This morning the clouds are slowing giving away to blue sky.  There are people over at the state park across the street with a tear-drop trailer.   My wife is interested in checking it out.  Soon we may walk over to the ocean and enjoy the beauty of the day.

Here is a picture of our view of the ocean across the street from where we live.

My thoughts return to the question of faith.   What is faith and what role does faith play in our lives?  What can we have faith in?

It seems to me that faith is about trusting something that we can’t know for sure.  Is there a God, seems like many people have the faith there is?  Can we have faith in our government, seems like many people have lots of doubts?  Can we have faith in ourselves, what would that feel like?  Can a single religion be the source of all the truth and can we have faith in a belief system?

My faith has evolved over my life.  As I have spent a lifetime of questioning, my faith has become more simple.  I do have faith in: the richness of the present moment; in my higher nature; in the power of love; in my connection to the consciousness of all beings; and in a greater source which my sense of whatever this is seems to be evolving.

What do you have faith in?  What beliefs do you have that you have looked at and have faith in?  Do you believe in a higher power and how do you relate to that power?  Is faith even something you think about and explore?

My upbringing was in the Catholic faith but as I explored my own truths I left the formal religion behind.  Not because it lacks value but because it seemed too layered in structure and authority.  I wanted a more direct path and through the inner practices, reading and exploring I have done for the last 35 years, I have a sense of a deeply spiritual and compassionate way of being in the world.  There is always new growth and opportunities for insight and awareness.  I can have faith in ever expanding levels of understand and consciousness.

May you have faith in what matters to you.

Beach Runs, Beauty, Reading, And Faith

Today I went in search of a nice long beach to run on.  I found one that goes all the way to the next town north 8 miles away.   The only barriers are creeks that you have to forge but nothing too deep as they flow out into the ocean.  Running on a beach is so nice because it is easy on the legs and just right for a running mindfully (This way I won’t trip over rocks or roots as I tune inward.)

Between here and the nearest town there must be at least a half dozen state parks and places to hike into the hills or down to the beach.  The nearest town is Yachats, which name comes from the native people and it means “dark waters.”  The view of the ocean from the surrounding Coastal Range must have seemed much darker compared to the rivers and streams.  There is so much natural beauty here that I am in awe.

My readings have all been supporting my inner work since I got here.  Ram Dass’s book Be Love Now, Hilda Charlton’s Saints Alive, and Michael Singer’s The Untethered Soul all have been sharing their wisdom with me and inviting me to further awaken as I read and explore this place.  When you and I mix the richness of the interior of each of us, then toss in some inspirational and enlightening reading, and add this place that naturally calls a person higher and it is so easy to heal and expand.  This healing brings wholeness and more light to the world.

In Be Love Now Ram Dass provoked a question in me that I need to now spend some time exploring.  He said with his Guru Maharaj-ji he had total faith and when things get rough he can fall back on that faith.  I thought, what do I have that kind of faith in?  Is faith necessary in tough times to more easily make it through?  I need to explore this question of faith.  My initial response is that I have faith in the power of love and the power of consciousness.  There is no guru, Buddha or religion for me to turn to, so can I turn to my heart or to the part of me that is in unity with all things?

Three Out Of The Ordinary Experiences At The Beach

This morning as I did my sitting and walking meditation on the beach I was filled with gratitude for this place of such beauty.  It is as if I have more own private beach even though there is a Oregon State Park Wayside here called Bob Creek.  The people who stop don’t seem to venture very far from their cars, trucks and RV’s.  That is ok with me because I have about ¼ mile of beach to myself most of the time.

Today while I was expanding outward and joining with this beautiful place I had three interesting encounters.  The first was a creature came from the hills and walked across the sand and entered the ocean and swam off.  I was like a weasel or something with a long slender body and four legs.  I have never seen this kind of animal before.

Later I was sitting and entering into a state in which I was making contact with a highly evolved spirit (Christ consciousness)  and enjoying the grace of that when all of s sudden I hear noise to my right and I open my eyes and there is this deeply tanned and rugged looking older guy with a dolly (hand-truck) on the beach and a long strap or rope.  He seemed to appear out of nowhere.  He said he was looking for a piece of wood and he found it and hauled it away.  I have never seen that happen on a beach before either.

The morning practice is beginning to take shape and I feel more at peace and more in the moment.  The sounds of the place and the beauty are so expansive that I just place myself in it and sit or walk in silence and so much of the grace of the moment flows through me naturally.  Just being fully present is so expansive in itself and then if I put intention to the experience everything becomes even more powerful.  My intention is to further awaken and to be an ever-expanding source of love and light.

I am beginning to feel rested after a very stressful move and I feel as if I am releasing some of the trauma of the past job.  It feels so good to be relaxed and lighter.

I send my love and light out to everyone who could use a dose, may you be at peace.

Touching Into The Ocean Of Consciousness

The wind was blowing, the waves were crashing, the smells of the ocean were surrounding and the sun was trying to break through the thin layer of clouds and then I was gone.  I slipped below my busy mind and the “I” of my ego was gone.  There was just the ocean of consciousness and my “self” was replaced by the Self of Oneness.

Before my mind was noisily looking for what to do, then I felt the wind on me and saw the ocean and soon I was no longer an object touched by the wind but the wind itself; I was no longer the observer of the ocean but had merged with it and felt its vastness across the planet.  I felt at home.

Just a touch into the infinite, just moments of unity consciousness and I can still feel it over 22 hours past.  The call to merge further is welcoming and over the next while I will follow that call and become more deeply acquainted with what is eternal and infinite.  The more I return to this expanded state the more two different responses grow.

One response is to merge and be fully present to that place of unity and oneness and live in the grace and joy of that forever.  Bliss is a wonderful place to hang out and I know for sure that I need a bigger dose of this expansion so I can feel it out in the world.  Maybe this merging is what heaven truly is?

The second response is to come back so I can help others find this place of bliss and self-realization.   Coming back I think I can bring the frame of mind of unity while I help others.  I need to test out this idea of being the ocean of consciousness and also being present to others.   I do have a strong sense that staying out in bliss-land is not as important to me as helping others join me.

I am off to the beach for another encounter with the both the ocean and the ocean of consciousness.

Got Lost, Need To Remain Grounded

On Saturday I fully intended on writing a post after I returned from a long run up into the forest.  However I encountered a slight problem.  We had this map and we were going to meet back at the car in two hours.  I was going to run this loop trail that seemed easy to do in the amount of time we had planned.  The first 90 minutes were almost all up hill.  Eventually I came out onto a road and thought this isn’t what the map showed.   At some point after wrong turns, a rollercoaster of hills and feeling very tired, I could feel the wind from the ocean and followed it back to Highway 101.  Six hours later I made it back to the car.

The trail we thought we were on was further up the road.  I had run to the top of the ridge and was clearly not going where I thought I was and actually ended several miles south of where we live and even further from where the car was.   My wife went to get her mountain bike and was going to go find me.  I hitched a ride to where the car was and waited for her return.  I could not go up the trail looking for her because I had already gone 6 hours.  I kept honking the horn and she trusting her intuition at some point and headed back and heard the horn.

The next day I was really sore and still hungry from the adventure.  I decided I needed to be careful.  As I go inward I have to watch out that I keep grounded.  Part of me wants to leave the earth plane and travel on higher levels of consciousness.  Hilda Charlton talks about traveling on the Soul plane where she loves to hang out with other highly conscious souls.  I feel that same draw, to join in oneness but I also have a body and need to stay in this world while I am here.  I was talking to an excellent psychic yesterday Joseph Vasquez (from Portland) who gave me a grounding exercise using my base or root chakra.

This exercise evolves me imagining that I am sending my energy down through the base of my spine through a golden rod, which connects me to the earth.  He said as I explore into higher realms I need to keep connected so I can integrate what I learn as I go up.  That makes great sense to me.  I will be doing my grounding every day as I go exploring other planes of existence.

Lately it seems the universe is providing us all the information we need as we create this new life for ourselves.  This morning I began my inner work sitting along the ocean and I had a very expansive experience entering into the ocean of consciousness.  I will write more about this experience tomorrow.

You Have Been Sent To Make The World A Better Place

The world is in trouble.  Many have prayed.  God sent help.  God sent you.”  I saw this quote last night over at Facebook by Marianne Williamson.  This made be wonder, how can I more fully step into my unique purpose and expression to make the world a better place?  The world does need you and I to step up to the purposeful reason we are here at this important time in the history of humanity.

How do we step up?  How do we claim our power?  How do we let out consciousness and compassion be our guiding forces? What are the unique gifts we have to offer?  Can we believe in ourselves enough to do what we are here to do?

The solutions lie not in the political process, in eliminating government, or any other conventional interventions.  The way to a better world is with you and I:

Each of us must open their minds and hearts so they can let light and love flow through them out into the world
Each of us must set their ego’s aside and let their higher nature be the guide
Each of us needs to find their quiet wisdom inside
Each of us needs to expand into their potential and open to what is infinite and eternal within them
Each of us needs to humbly seek the way to serve others
Each of us must find the determination to walk boldly into the challenges and be a force for positive change
Each of us must find their own way to inner peace
Each of us must express their uniqueness for the betterment of society
Each of us must closely examine their own beliefs that are too often mistaken and very limiting
Each of us must go in search of their own truth and move away from the opinions and judgment of self and others
Each of us needs to find their way to their own freedom
Each of us would benefit from choosing happiness as the way they want to be in the world

Are you ready?  Let's go forward with grace and light.

We Have Arrived In A Beautiful Place

It is late last night as I write the first draft of this.  We have arrived at our new home and are very grateful we made it.  The 24 hours of driving turned out to be 35 hours of agony at times.  The big rental truck was a bear to drive sometimes scared the sh_t out of me.  At one point it started to sway back and forth so much I thoughts I was going to lay the truck on its side in a ditch.  Another time when one of the dual rear tires blew and I had to wrestle the beast to the side of the road.  We made it safe - YES!!!.

Now as I edit this I am sitting at my desk looking out the window at the ocean (picture from my desk of Oregon State Parks - Bob Creek Wayside across the street from our house) on a bright sunny day.  Have I died and gone to heaven?  The walk this morning on the beach with my wife and our dog Pax, was so much fun.  Pax got to have his first encounter with the ocean and we enjoyed walking in awe of being in such a beautiful and healing place.

I feel so glad to be here because even though my wife is very uncertain, I know this is where we both need to be on many levels.  There is very strong intuitive sense the there are major expansive shifts waiting for each of us as we settle fully into the now of this place and the circumstances that brought all of this into alignment.  I will share more as we explore and express the evolving expansion of consciousness and compassion that awaits us.

What I feel most in this moment is a peacefulness of having arrived at where we are suppose to be and a calling to explore deeper contemplation.  As we do the unpacking for the next few days I will often walk over to the beach at sit quietly and just be present.  Soon when everything has found its place.  I will walk and sit for hours on the beach and in the incredibly lush forest and let nature heal me from all the pain and suffering of those that I have worked with.  After a month or so I will know how next I can be of service to others.

Peace and happiness to you.

On The Road To Our New Home

The next few days are very busy and lots of driving to get to our destination by Monday evening.  If I get a chance to write I will but it is highly unlikely; then no Internet until Weds.   I want to share a couple of ideas you will find helpful and that I will be exploring the next few very busy days.

Take time each day to be fully present to what you are doing

See if you can go below the noise of your mind and just listen to what is going on inside

When you have a few minutes of just watching, take it deeper by acknowledging the consciousness of the watcher

Relax into a sense of Self (Higher Self) as beyond thoughts and connect with your wise mind

Listen for the intuitive guidance that is trying to show you the way towards higher consciousness and self-realization

Back with you on Weds August 3rd,  Peace to you!

Life As A Teacher

Today's post happened when I needed a break from packing.  The moving truck gets picked up tomorrow.  I look forward to clearing this house out because we now have piles of full boxes ready to be relocated.  There never seems to be enough time or enough boxes to make a move happen.  Moving is good practice for being present and for watching the thoughts that come up in the midst of everything feeling disrupted.

I have noticed lots of energy to move forward and a restlessness in my body to get into action.  Ready to go is how my body feels and tomorrow the truck will allow me to move into action.

The mind has been serving up little doubts about the move because my ego prefers predictable and this is far from it.  If I watch my mind I can see the ego at work wanted to put some controls on the situation.  It is obviously hard to place controls on the unknown.  If I can be present and ok with what is, this process goes easily.

What I know is that this move will change things up in many ways.  I will use the time once the move is completed to deepen my inner practices and release the emotional baggage of my work.  The baggage is there and being busy with the move is not giving me time to process and release.  The month of August will be Part One of my release and healing.  My thoughts can either support this healing or clog it up.  I choose to step back and not be run by my thoughts but be more of a non-judging observer.

Everything will be ok when I am ok with everything.”  I saw this phrase in one of the books I am reading and it reminded me how simple life can be when I am in an aware, peaceful and accepting frame of mind.  Have a mindful day.

Tragedy In Norway: How Can We Create A Better World?

The tragedy in Norway is awful and the people of that nation must feel so much grief and loss.  Let us all grow in consciousness and compassion from this experience. These kinds of situations are going to happen unless we as a human race begin to question our own thoughts.  Anders Breivik, the mass murderer, actually believed his own thoughts and seemed to think he was rationally carrying out something he thought needed to happen. This so called rational thinking has been the source of all wars and human atrocities.  Killing others can only be rationalized without examining our thoughts and without being connected to our hearts.

The human ego always believes it is right and therefore bombards are thinking with ideas that support its agenda.  In Norway the killer’s ego thought he was superior to others and therefore he knew what he had to do.  This is all the work of the ego being right and others being wrong.  The human ego is a judging machine passing judgment on everyone and everything that is different then what it thinks is right.  All thoughts need to be questioned because our thoughts are not who we are, they are simply words we give meaning to.

In the case in Norway the thoughts of the killer were terribly misguided, judgmental, fear driven, hateful and without any connection to his heart.  These tragic acts were heartless.  The mind can rationalize anything that is why we need to keep a constant watch over what we are thinking.  Each of us has the same capacity for rationalizing and if we don’t watch our thoughts and keep connected to our heart then we too are capable of terrible things.

The basic rules for a better world are:

Always question your thoughts, thoughts are not real, they are just words you give meaning to

If you are sure you are right then question your thoughts even more

Always stay connected to your heart; your heart knows the deeper truth

If you lack compassion in any situation go in search of your heart

Find your own truth; only you can know what is right for you

Finally question all belief systems that say they are right and others are wrong.  Those that lead belief movements like Fundamentalism or Religion of any kind are driven by the human ego

Peace to you all.
